Devyn scores short-handed for the tie to start Playdowns
submitted. Written by John Gyles. The Girl’s Georgian Shores Lightning Scenic Caves bantam hockey team began the Provincial Playdowns against the South Bruce Otters on Friday, February 13 in Meaford.  The first period started as a Friday the thirteenth nightmare for the Lightning when the Lightning goal tender, Meagan Swanson of Meaford, was beaten 30 seconds into the game with a screened shot.  4 minutes later, the Otters had a shot stopped by Swanson, but capitalized on the rebound to take a 2-0 lead.  At this point it looked like it was going to be a rout by the Otters.

Swanson’s teammates woke up and started to play.  Swanson turned away all shots for the balance of the game and was now looking for some help from her teammates.  The Lightning began the attack with continual shots on the Otters goaltender, but could not put one away.  The score after 2 was still 2-0 Otters with shots on goal even at 16.  After the flood break, the Lightning came out hard in the 3rd period with 14 shots on the Otters.  Early in the third, Payton Weir of Ravenna scored a rebound goal to bring the Lightning within one.  Midway through the third, the Lightning received a hooking penalty.  Being short handed did not stop defenceman Devyn Cochrane of Collingwood from intercepting the puck at the Lightning blue line.  Cochrane skating hard with total puck control beat 3 Otter players for a breakaway.  Cochrane faked the goaltender causing her to go down, allowed Cochrane to put the puck up and over to tie the game.  The Lightning continued to work hard to get the go ahead goal, but time ran out for a final score of 2-2.  Congratulations to Swanson on terrific goaltending holding the Otters to 2 goals and allowing the comeback with the great efforts of Weir and Cochrane.  The Lightning continue their playdowns in Durham against the West Grey Warriors on Wednesday, February 18.
