Playdowns on the Road Again
(submitted) Written by John Gyles. The Girl’s Georgian Shores Lightning Scenic Caves bantam hockey team took to the road this past week for playdowns in Durham and Walkerton.  The Durham game was on Wednesday, February 18 against the West Grey Warriors.  The Lightning played short 3 players that were out with injuries or illness.  The Lightning held their ground with a score 0-0 after one period.

Early in the 2nd, the Warriors broke through the Lightning defense for a breakaway only to be chased down by Jacinta Peters of Collingwood to knock the puck away maintaining the scoreless tie. The Warriors continued to increase the pressure capitalizing on the Lightning’s short bench.  The Warriors scored 3 goals through the remainder of the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead into the 3rd.  Although the Lightning had a well needed break between periods, they could not rally a comeback.  Final score, 4-0 for the West Grey Warriors.

The Lightning continued play in Walkerton on Sunday, February 23 against the Capitals.  The Capitals had totally dominated the Lightning this season, however the Lightning were up for this next challenge. Lightning’s Hailey Stevenson of Meaford, got a shot on the Capital’s goaltender forcing a rebound and Jacinta Peters put the rebound away to take a 1-0 lead.  The Lightning carried the lead into the 2nd when the Capital’s scored 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead.  It appeared that Joren Wilcox of Kimberley, cut the lead by one with a booming shot that ricocheted off the back of the net out and under the goaltender.  Unfortunately, it was not ruled a goal.  The Capitals quickly negated any momentum from this missed goal and took a 4-1 lead.  They added another insurance goal in the third to take a 5-1 lead.  The Lightning were not prepared to give up and pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker.  Stevenson set up Wilcox to cut the lead to 5-2.   The Lightning’s time ran out cutting short a full comeback.

The Lightning, return home this week with games against the Owen Sound Ice Hawks on Wednesday, February 25 and the Saugeen Shores Storm on Friday, February 27.  Full schedule and results at www.georgianshoreshockey.ca
