Bantam Girls Year End Tournament
(submitted) Written by John Gyles. The Girl’s Georgian Shores Lightning Scenic Caves bantam hockey team hosted the Western Ontario Athletic Association year end tournament at the Meaford arena on March 7 & 8.  The Lightning were one of 3 teams in the group 2 pool which included the TCDMHA Rebels and the Saugeen Shores Storm.

The Lightning faced off against the Rebels in the first game.  The Rebels came out strong putting the Lightning on the defense for most of the period.  The Rebels took a 1-0 lead 3 minutes into the game.  The Lightning dug in with strong defense by Devyn Cochrane of Collingwood, Millie Hannan of Craigleith and Jayli Brown of Meaford complimented by superb goaltending by Meagan Swanson of Meaford.  Although shots were limited by both teams in the 2nd period, Joren Wilcox of Kimberly centered the puck to Payton Weir of Ravenna who set up Jacinta Peters who found the back of the net with a beautiful goal to tie the game 1-1 midway through the period.  Late in the 3rd period as the game appeared to be heading for a tie, the Lightning took an untimely penalty.  The Rebels capitalized on the player advantage and took a 2-1 lead.  The Lightning pulled Swanson to play for the tie when the Rebels found the empty net to win the game 3-1.

In the 2nd game, the Lightning took on the Storm who have had the Lightning’s number all season.  The 1st period was end to end with no scoring.  Nearing the end of the 2nd period, Wilcox, under pressure from the Storm defense, let a shot go from the point which found the back of the net to put the Lightning out front 1-0.  Swanson faced a barrage of shots in the 3rd period when the Storm finally got a shot past the defiant goaltender with 3 minutes left in the game. On a power play into the final minute, the Lighting pulled the goaltender for a 6 on 4 advantage.  Cochrane & Hannan set up Makenna Giles of Clarksburg and she released a shot from the point putting it past the Storm net minder to take a 2-1 lead. The teams now at even strength for the last minute, the Storm pulled their goaltender.  The Lightning determined to win took control and kept the play in the Storm’s end, but could not get the puck into the empty net.  The Lightning were held to a triumphant 2-1 win!

All 3 teams in the pool were tied after round robin play, each with 1 win and 1 loss.  Unfortunately, the Lightning were eliminated by the tie breaking rules (goals for and against) by 1 goal.  The Rebels went on to win the consolation final 2-1 in double overtime against Walkerton and the Storm won the tournament final 1-0 over West Grey.
