Playdowns Wrap Up
(submitted) Written by John Gyles.
The Girl’s Georgian Shores Lightning Scenic Caves bantam hockey team began the last 3 games of the Provincial Playdowns this past week.  The Lightning hosted the Owen Sound Ice Hawks in Thornbury on Wednesday, February 25.  The Lightning pressured the Hawks right from the opening faceoff controlling the play through most of the game.  Early in the 2nd period, Karissa Bowins of Meaford opened the scoring for the Lightning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Lightning continued to pound away at the Hawks goaltender, but could not get the puck past her.  It came close when Makenna Giles of Clarksburg, had a booming shot off the post that rang through the arena.  The Hawks broke through the defense in the 3 rd and got the shot past Meagan Swanson of Meaford to tie the game 1-1.  The Lighting continued to fire shots at the Hawks net minder, but could not break the tie for a final score 1-1.

Friday, February 27 the Lightning matched up against the visiting Saugeen Shores Storm in Meaford.  The Storm scored 3 minutes into the game to take the 1-0 lead.  From there, the Lightning put up a good defense and had many shots attempting to bring them even.  Late in the 2nd period, the storm took a 2-0 lead that they carried into the 3rd.  Part way through the 3rd, Bowins cut the lead to 2-1 on a rebound shot.  Unfortunately, that was all the Lightning could get as the Storm added 2 more goals for the 4-1 win.

The Lightning finished the Playdown schedule with their third game in 5 nights in Chatsworth against the Rebels.  With the short bench and exhaustion appearing to set in, the Lightning had a tough go in this game.  Swanson gave the Lightning a chance in the net, but her goal scorers could not get past the Rebels goaltender.  The Lightning lost 4-0 to the Rebels.

The Lightning will complete their 2014/15 season at the Meaford Arena for their year end tournament.  This tournament will host 12 girls teams playing 16 games over Saturday March 7 and Sunday March 8.  This is a great opportunity to watch some great girl’s hockey.  Full schedule and results on this website.
