Austin Holley Memorial Tournament News Article
Novice Reps snag silver in Wiarton Effective teamwork, stingy defence and top notch goaltending led the Georgian Shores Novice Rep Lightning to strike silver at this past weekend’s 4th annual Austin Holley Memorial Fall Shootout in Wiarton.

The Novice boys enjoyed an unbeaten run until being edged 2-1 by a strong Lucan Irish squad in a hard-fought gold medal game on Sunday. Jaren Pirie scored the lone Lightning goal while goaltender Carter Green, who would surrender only three goals over the entire weekend, was named game MVP for his brilliant play in net. Following a tight checking scoreless first period, Pirie opened the scoring midway through the second period when he banged home a rebound off a Cameron Samson breakaway chance. It would remain a one-goal contest until Lucan sniper Dylan Fisher evened the affair with only 58 seconds remaining in the second frame. The Lightning and Irish would exchange plenty of scoring opportunities in a back and forth third period but both goaltenders were razor sharp and stood tall to the challenge. And although it appeared overtime was looming, Georgian Shores found themselves in penalty trouble in the late stages of the contest. The Irish’s Luke Ahrens eventually notched the game winner while on the power play after a wild scramble in front of the Georgian Shores net with only 17.6 seconds remaining in regulation. The Novice Reps opened the tournament with a convincing 4-1 win over the Shallow Lake Lakers on Saturday morning. Samson scored twice and Pirie and Dylan McFadden each netted singles while McFadden (2), Pirie, Quinn Hawten and Cooper Allen pitched in with helpers. Defenceman Logan Burnham was awarded game MVP for his tenacious and reliable work on the back end. With a gold medal final berth on the line, the Lightning passed the test with flying colours on Saturday afternoon by blanking the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs, 2-0. Travis Brown and Noah Ruffett found the back of the net for the Lightning while Pirie, who set up both markers, earned game MVP honours. Burnham also chipped in with an assist and netminder Green recorded his second shutout of the season. The Novice Reps (2-1) return to GBMHL action this Sunday when they visit the Shelburne Wolves (2-3-1). Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
